STEP vs STL vs 3MF for 3D Printing: What Should You Send?

Understand when STEP/STP solid CAD is better than STL or 3MF mesh data, and why mesh units and resolution matter to additive manufacturing quotations.

Actual compatibility, process settings and engineering decisions still depend on the equipment, material, drawing and operating condition of the specific requirement.

STEP / STP keeps solid CAD intent

STEP is usually the better engineering-review format when precise solid geometry is available. It can be measured and interrogated as CAD rather than only as a triangulated surface.

STL is a mesh, not a full CAD model

STL represents geometry as triangles. It is widely used for printing but normally does not carry reliable unit information, so a 25 mm part can become a 25 inch part if the receiving workflow assumes the wrong unit.

3MF can carry richer print information

3MF is also a mesh-based format but can carry units and other information more reliably than legacy STL. Support still depends on the receiving software and workflow.

Mesh resolution changes file quality

A mesh that is too coarse can visibly facet curved surfaces. A mesh that is unnecessarily dense increases file size without improving the physical print. Export resolution should be appropriate to the part size and surface requirement.

Best CG submission route

If you have STEP/STP plus an STL/3MF, send both where possible: the solid file helps engineering review and the mesh supports print-preview / slicing workflows. Add a 2D drawing when tolerances, threads or inspection dimensions matter.
