Prepare for Coupling Alignment Before Measuring

Alignment measurements are useful only when the assembly is ready for them. Loose foundations, soft foot, pipe strain or a damaged coupling can undermine a carefully recorded alignment result.

The target condition may account for thermal growth or manufacturer tolerances. Record how the machine sits and operates rather than assuming that cold, unloaded alignment is the complete answer.

Practical checks

  • Isolate the equipment and confirm it is safe to access.
  • Check fasteners, foundation condition, coupling condition and soft foot.
  • Inspect connected pipework for strain before adjusting machine position.
  • Use the specified method, target values and measurement positions, recording the final state.

Record the finding against the actual part, machine or drawing revision. A useful check identifies both the observation and the conditions under which it was made, so another person can review it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not use coupling flexibility as a substitute for correct alignment.
  • Do not move a pump against constrained pipework without reviewing the installation.

What to collect before a review

  • Equipment and coupling models
  • Base and piping photographs
  • Approved alignment targets and operating temperature

Send clear original files where available. Mark uncertain dimensions, missing information and the result you need. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions instead of filling the gaps with guessed specifications.

The next decision

Correct installation issues before final alignment. Qualified personnel should perform adjustments and the return-to-service checks required by the equipment procedure.
