Specify the Edge, Not Just “Deburr”

Deburring can mean removing loose material, breaking a sharp edge or producing a controlled radius. The drawing should say which outcome matters without allowing critical geometry to disappear.

Cutting, drilling and machining leave different edge conditions. A sealing face, locating edge or thin web may need careful treatment, while a hand-contact edge may need a different finish.

Practical checks

  • Identify touch points, sealing edges and features that must retain their shape.
  • State whether a controlled chamfer or radius is required.
  • Review internal intersections and edges that are hard to access.
  • Choose an inspection method that can confirm the specified result.

Record the finding against the actual part, machine or drawing revision. A useful check identifies both the observation and the conditions under which it was made, so another person can review it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not apply a large edge break to every surface by default.
  • Do not use surface appearance as the only check where a burr could detach inside an assembly.

What to collect before a review

  • Part drawing
  • Critical edges and application
  • Material, finish and inspection requirements

Send clear original files where available. Mark uncertain dimensions, missing information and the result you need. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions instead of filling the gaps with guessed specifications.

The next decision

Agree an edge condition that is measurable and appropriate to the part. If deburring changes a fit, flow path or sealing feature, include that effect in the manufacturing review.
