First Article Inspection: Agree the Plan First

First Article Inspection checks whether the first representative output meets the agreed requirements. It works best when the drawing, characteristics, methods and evidence are defined before the part arrives.

A first piece produced through a different route may not represent the intended batch. The inspection plan should identify which process, material condition and drawing revision the evidence covers.

Practical checks

  • Freeze the drawing revision and identify the characteristics to report.
  • Agree instruments, methods and any external tests required.
  • Link the inspected sample to material and production records.
  • Record actual results and deviations rather than a blanket OK against every feature.

Record the finding against the actual part, machine or drawing revision. A useful check identifies both the observation and the conditions under which it was made, so another person can review it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not approve a full batch from a sample with unresolved critical deviations.
  • Do not confuse an attractive inspection report with traceable measurement evidence.

What to collect before a review

  • Released drawing
  • Required report format
  • Material, process and acceptance requirements

Send clear original files where available. Mark uncertain dimensions, missing information and the result you need. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions instead of filling the gaps with guessed specifications.

The next decision

Review deviations and agree disposition before repeat production. A first-article result is evidence for the defined sample and process; it does not remove the need for production control.
